I have a market that is within walking distance from my place.
There is one thing i love about the market is the fruits and vegetables, everything are really fresh and tender. Unlike in Singapore where the vegetable tend to be older.
Going to a market was a culture shock .... i see all kinds meats hanging on the racks, live chicken slaughtered on site, frogs, turtles etc .... it takes a bit of getting used to. Also, it really a noisy place where u point to the butcher what meat you want. In Singapore, every parts are cut out nicely for you and you just need to choose. Over here, everything is in big big pieces, I cannot differentiate the meats. Their pork are very fatty here ... yes literally a lot of fats!! There are so many variety of chickens till i go blur!! Also they have different shades of yellow too .... you need to buy a half or whole chicken if you want fresh ones. If you want parts then you have to go frozen chicken section.
In general, their cooking here tend to be high in salt n oil including their restaurants.
Here are some of the things that i had cooked:
Steamed Horlick cake
(btw Horlick is not available in GZ)
Boiled Chicken (Qingyuan chicken not hainanese chicken ok)
Chicken here tend to be skinner as they hv more exercise, meat tend to be tougher but more flavourful ... nice!!
