Going to market has been a weekly to twice week affair, the freshness and variety cannot beat the supermarket at all.
I simply love to go despite having to rush two places within 1.5 hours ........ but its definitely an "inspiring" trip
Inspire me to try new dishes and recipes- all thanks to the stall owner.
They would share all their recipes ... pick the ingredients for you the moment you mention the dish
Sometimes they even teach you how to choose the ingredients
Being the younger than other "consumers" has its advantage as they taught me different things too ....
I remembered that the fishmonger was suggesting to ask me to get a slimy looking fish with big mouth and sharp teeth called "Toi Her" or translated literally"hard fish"
She then taught me how to cook it - deep fry or soup.
Deep fry after marinate with salt and pepper then coat with pepper. Alternatively, boil in soap, add "tang cai"and coriander once the fishs are cooked
There was an elderly old man standing next to me who overheard the whole conversation. He replied, "the younger generation woul prefer the crispiness of deep frying while we the older generation would prefer the "cheng" kind of cooking method.
Such human interaction does create wonderful inspirations
Desipte the fact that my 4 year old complained that market smells and is wet ....... i still believe that market has its unique beauty
Somehow, i am still glad that i am still involved in singapore's unique marketing culture since i am staying in a very old estate. I seriously think that we would miss out a lot of our history if markets are eliminated.
Many younger people no longer eat small fish as they complained that small fishes are too bony but they failed to realised the sweetness of their flesh.
The variety of fish that we are exposed to becomes smaller too as a result of our choice.
We never knew how to remove all the grilles and innards of the fish anymore since it would be by the fishmonger or supermarket.
There are some much to learn from our surrounding .........
